Speaking isn’t performance. It’s strategy.
Why Alex Merry helps founders sharpen their message, expand influence, and speak where it matters most.

Alex Merry
At Oratore Speakers, we spotlight leaders who see speaking as more than performance. Alex Merry does exactly that. As the curator of TEDx Clapham and coach to founders and Fortune 500 leaders, he shows how speaking can be a strategy to sharpen your message, expand influence, and show up where it matters most.
Through his MicDrop community, he continues to share fresh, practical insights on building authority through ideas, which is exactly why we wanted to explore his “why.”
Alex, you went from reluctant speaker to coaching some of the most successful tech founders in the world. What changed?
“I never set out to be a speaker. I was the COO of a startup and realised our growth depended on my ability to present. The big shift was the realisation that speaking isn’t about me - it’s about shining a light on ideas that have the potential to create change at scale.”
Why did you create MicDrop?
“I started MicDrop because there is so much more to speaking than the performance. If you want to amplify your ideas, you two things… a strategy and a community. Doing this alone is brutal - but when you’ve got the right system and people around you, everything changes.”
What keeps you doing this work now?
“The ripple effect - seeing ideas gain traction and create change. And then it’s the overachievements - those moments when a member realises they’re now operating at the next level. I’m very lucky to do what I do."
What it means for speakers
"The world doesn’t need more polished speakers. It needs leaders who can shift the conversation and change the way people think. That’s the difference between a public speaker and a thought leader: one chases the spotlight, while the other becomes it. It’s not “look at me,” it’s “look at this.”
